Urging ACP and EU Parliamentarians to take concrete actions to improve women’s health

June 22nd, 2012

The 23rd session of the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly (JPA) took place in Horsens, Denmark, from 28 to 30 May 2012.  The Assembly, comprised of Members of Parliament from the African, Caribbean, and Pacific (ACP) States and the European Union (EU) Member States, held political discussions on common key issues.

The ACP-EU JPA was well attended by ACP and European civil society organizations ranging from framers’ organizations to heath organizations such as Marie Stopes International (MSI) and the International Planned Parenthood Federation European Network (IPPF EN). MSI and IPPF EN attended the ACP-EU JPA in the framework of a joint activity under Countdown2015Europe with the objective of ensuring that Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and social issues are taken up in the current negotiations on the 11th European Development Fund (EDF).

Prior to the opening of the 23rd session, MSI addressed EU and ACP representatives at the Women’s Forum and stressed the importance of improving access to health services for women in rural areas. The recommendations formulated by MSI brought about positive reactions from the audience. The powerpoint presentation is available here.

Family Planning Summit: an unmissable moment (London, 11 July/ Brussels, 10 July 2012)

June 22nd, 2012

In London on 11 July on the same day as World Population Day, the UK Government and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will host the Family Planning Summit. They will come together with the European Commission, European donors, developing country governments, UN agencies,  the private sector, and civil society to raise funds for voluntary family planning.

There are hundreds of millions of women in developing countries who want to delay or avoid a pregnancy but are not using an effective method of family planning. The Summit aims to provide an additional 120 million women in the world’s poorest countries with access lifesaving contraceptives, services and information by 2020. Increasing access to family planning information, services and supplies has dramatic health benefits for women and children, preventing up to a quarter of maternal deaths. It is also an extremely cost effective investment towards the achievement of the maternal and child health Millennium Development Goals and wider development outcomes. And yet, global attention and leadership on this issue has been lacking.
