Britain launches new contraceptive drive

November 30th, 2011

Stephen O’ Brian, the Development Minister, recently annouced Britain’s pledge of £35 million for contraceptive supplies in poor countries at the International Conference on Family Planning in Dakkar.  This new money will help UNFPA to prevent hold-ups in the supplies of hormonal contraceptives and condoms.  It will also support a rapid response-style unit to procure and deliver supplies to countries facing stock-outs, whilst governments work to remedy the contraceptive flow through more long-term arrangements. This contraceptive drive is intended to prevent more than 2 million unintended pregnancies and avert nearly 220,000 unsafe abortions.

UK puts the right to choose at the heart of population debate

October 31st, 2011

On the day the 7 billionth baby was predicted to be born, International Development Secretary Andrew Mitchell spoke of DFID’s position on population- putting rights at the heart of the agenda.

‘It is not for DFID – or anyone – to say how many children people should have – that has to be a free choice,’ Mitchell began, before going on to explain some of the benefits of funding voluntary family planning.

‘Giving girls and women in developing countries the choice to decide whether, when and how many children they have is saving lives. It means fewer women die in childbirth and the poorest families can make what little they have go further. Family planning is a smart and extremely cost effective investment of aid.’
