Countdown 2015 Europe brings together a group of leading European non-governmental organisations working in the field of sexual and reproductive health and rights. In 1994 as an outcome of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) the world embarked upon an ambitious 20 year programme focusing on individuals' needs and rights, built upon the principles of gender equality, eliminating violence against women and ensuring women’s ability to control their own fertility. Progress towards achieving the goals of this programme has been slow and in 2006 the UN adopted a new target under MDG 5 on achieving universal access to reproductive health by 2015. Countdown 2015 Europe aims to ensure that with only a few years to go before both the 20th Anniversary of the ICPD and 2015 that universal access to reproductive health becomes a reality. In order to achieve this target, the availability of reproductive health supplies is essential, since having access to reproductive health services makes no sense when there are no reproductive health supplies. Experienced in advocacy for reproductive health in Official Development Assistance (ODA), Countdown 2015 Europe conducts activities in 15 European countries and with the EU Institutions. We aim to achieve increased financial support of European donors for reproductive health supplies (RHS) and to improve European coordination and coherence to narrow the gaps between the needs, demand and availability of reproductive health supplies as an essential step toward achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
