What are RH supplies? Print E-mail

Reproductive health supplies (RHS) are not just condoms and other contraceptives...

...they refer to ‘all the essential equipment, commodities and medicines required for sexual and reproductive health, maternal and neonatal health and for effective responses to HIV and AIDS'. RHS are crucial for:

  • Family planning: including hormonal contraceptives, intrauterine devices, barrier methods, implants, creams and jellies.
  • Maternal and neonatal health care: including anesthetics, analgesics, antibacterials, antiseptics, oxytocics, vaccines and vitamins. Supplies for health care providers include kits for emergency delivery, professional midwifery and blood transfusions.
  • Reproductive tract infections: including diagnostic tests and antibiotics
  • HIV prevention and treatment: condoms, HIV medicines, and drugs to prevent mother-to-child transmission For further information see UNFPA

More than 350 million couples worldwide do not have access to modern family planning methods or reproductive health services. As a result, they cannot decide on the timing or spacing of their children; women do not have access to adequate supplies to ensure safe deliveries – thus putting their lives at risk; and people cannot protect themselves from sexually transmitted infections including HIV.
